CNC Aluminum Extrusion FAQ
Here are most of the questions related to CNC machining on aluminum extrusion profiles. We hope you will find the answer to your question. If not, please leave us a message.
- Dimension Test
Use a caliper and micrometer to test the length of the CNC aluminum extrusion part, cross-section dimensions, wall thickness, and hole diameters.
- Straightness and Distortion Test
Use a straightedge to detect perpendicularity, and use a straightness meter to detect the straightness of the CNC machined extrusion profile.
- Surface Test
Visual inspection of scratches and burrs on the CNC machined aluminum extrusion, Ra detection by roughness meter.
- Alloy Chemical Composition Test
Measure the chemical composition of aluminum alloy with a spectrometer.
- Mechanical Properties Test
Measure the hardness with Brinell hardness tester.
Detect the microstructure of the aluminum with a scanning electron microscope.
Tensile strength and yield strength are tested using universal testing machines.
- Finishing after CNC Machining
This order applies to most aluminum parts, especially for appearance parts.
- Finishing before CNC Machining
This will cost less.
But please note that the cutting part will be mill finish.
The fixtures as well as the aluminum shavings from the machining process may cause damage to the nearby coating.
Extra surface treatment can improve the appearance decoration and corrosion resistance of your aluminum parts.
Anodizing (film thickness 10-25μm) provides a metallic finish. In addition to natural silver, champagne, and black colors, anodizing can provide brilliant red, yellow, blue, green, purple, and more.
Hard anodizing (film thickness >50μm) can increase surface hardness and scratch resistance for wear-resistant parts.
Powder coating (coating thickness 80-120 μm) allows for high-gloss and matte finish. It also can be sandy or wood grain textures.

- Alloy 6063-T5
It is easily to be extruded. The 6063 extruded aluminum has a high surface finish and is commonly used in buildings, heat sinks, and frames.
- Alloy 6061-T6
The 6061 extruded aluminum has a higher strength (tensile strength ≥260MPa) and is suitable for structural parts or stressed parts, such as automotive parts and aviation components.
- Alloy 7075-T6
The 7075 aluminum extrusion profile has a super-high strength (tensile strength ≥500MPa). Alloy 7075 has a limited extrusion performance and high cutting resistance, It is mainly used for aerospace parts.
The extrusion process forms the aluminum part profile, and the CNC machine only works on some necessary processes and dimensions. This will result in a significant increase in material use. Compared to CNC machining on aluminum rods and plates, CNC machining on aluminum extrusion profile reduces cutting time.
Extruded aluminum profiles have a low surface roughness. When CNC aluminum extrusion, you can get a high surface flatness.
When you do traditional machining on aluminum extrusions, you may meet the problems of low precision, long working time, and difficulty handling complex structures. These problems can be solved by CNC machining.
CNC aluminum extrusion is automated through CAD/CAM programming, which reduces labor and provides stable quality. CNC equipment can machine some difficult aluminum extrusion parts with thin walls and deep cavities.
CNC aluminum extrusion can provide you with a precise aluminum part, with tolerance control up to ±0.02mm or even ±0.01mm.
Milling, turning, drilling, tapping, and other processes can be completed on a single CNC machine, which can avoid positioning errors of traditional step-by-step machining.
CNC Aluminum Extrusion is a manufacturing process for the precision machining of aluminum extrusion profiles by computer numerical control (CNC) machines.
Aluminum extrusion profiles are aluminum products with specific and complex cross-sections. CNC aluminum extrusion means the aluminum extrusions are milled, turned, drilled, and cut by CNC machines to form high-precision aluminum parts.
CNC Aluminum Extrusion combines the efficient forming capability of aluminum extrusion with precision CNC machining, enabling one-stop manufacturing from conceptual design to finished aluminum components.
