Stress-corrosion cracking is a potential challenge with this alloy, but it can be avoided with some precaution. Avoid all forms of stresses in the transverse direction of the material at any point where the surface has been sawed or machined.
For 7005 aluminum extrusions intended for use in marine or other strong electrolytes, post-weld aging may be necessary. This prevents selective corrosion attack at the welded heat-affected zone or assemblies where torch brazing has taken place.
In case the environment of using the extrusions is friendly to galvanic corrosion, the 7005 aluminum extrusions should only be fixed on aluminum alloys that portray the same electrolytic solution characteristics. On the alternative, the surfaces at the joint should be insulated or protected.
