Base your choice on different factors – desired visual outlook, alloy type, material thickness, etc. While the two welding methods are renowned in the aluminum fabrication world, their results and presentation may not be the same. Their working principles are different. TIG welding is based on the use of tungsten electrodes for the arc. As it melts the metal and a filler metal is applied, the welding joint is created. Instead of tungsten electrodes, MIG welding uses a consumable wire electrode. The process also incorporates a welding gun. During the MIG welding process, the weld must be shielded from contamination. TIG does a better job at controlling the heat intensity, but it is slower than MIG welding.
